Alabama knocks out Michigan State 38-0 in Cotton Bowl (Yahoo Sports)

Jake Coker played the game of his career, hooking up with Calvin Ridley for two touchdowns, as second-ranked Alabama aired it out to beat No. 3 Michigan State 38-0 Thursday night and advance to the national championship game. Alabama (13-1) will face No. 1 Clemson (14-0) on Jan. 11 in Arizona looking for its fourth national title in nine seasons under coach Nick Saban. Coker, the promising Florida State transfer who sat the bench most of last season, was nearly perfect.

Golden State was blown out by Dallas on Wednesday night for just its second loss of the season when Curry missed his first game since March because of a sore left lower leg. Houston cut it to 3 with a jump shot by James Harden with about 5 minutes left before Golden State scored the next six points, highlighted by an alley-oop dunk from Andre Iguodala to Bogut, to make it 111-102.

The Tigers are headed to the national championship game. Deshaun Watson turned in another stellar two-way performance, running for one touchdown, passing for another and accounting for 332 yards to lead top-ranked Clemson to a 37-17 victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Thursday. Clemson (14-0) dominated the second half and shut down Oklahoma's high-scoring offense, which had averaged 52 points over its last seven contests.

A person with direct knowledge of discussions has told The Associated Press that the Buffalo Bills plan to cut high-priced defensive end Mario Williams this offseason. No timetable was provided as to when Williams will be cut, but the person said the team's top pass-rushing threat will be playing his final game for Buffalo on Sunday, when the Bills (7-8) close the season hosting the New York Jets (10-5). Williams has become expendable because his contract is deemed to be too expensive, and also because he has struggled to make the transition to the defensive system introduced by first-year coach Rex Ryan.

Florida State quarterback Sean Maguire is back calling signals in the Peach Bowl after being carted off the field with a lower left leg injury earlier in the game against Houston. Maguire left the game late in the first quarter and returned midway through the second quarter. The injury left the Seminoles with J.J. Cosentino, who had been third-string most of the season, at quarterback.

Coach Mike Pettine said Thursday that Manziel's season is over after he was entered into the league's protocol on head injuries a day earlier. Police charged star TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin with felony assault of a police officer stemming from a bar fight early Thursday and he was suspended for this weekend's Alamo Bowl game against No. 15 Oregon. The decision by coach Gary Patterson effectively ends Boykin's college career, since he is a senior. Patterson said Boykin and junior wide receiver Preston Miller were suspended for Saturday's game due to a violation of team rules that he did not specify.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice during a four-goal rally in the third period and the Washington Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to nine games and overtake the Dallas Stars for the NHL points lead. Marcus Johansson put Washington ahead 8:32 into the final period, and Andre Burakovsky scored 1:24 later. Evgeny Kuznetsov had two assists during the third period.

Hoyer missed the last two games after suffering his second concussion in less than a month on Dec. 13. Dallas receiver Dez Bryant will miss the finale against Washington on Sunday and is likely to have another procedure on the right foot he broke in the season opener. Bryant missed five games after surgery on the broken foot and came back following another procedure to speed the healing. Coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday that Bryant also was dealing with a left ankle injury, and had issues with his left knee after returning from the broken foot.

Browns starting quarterback Johnny Manziel is being evaluated for a concussion and could miss Sunday's season finale against Pittsburgh. The team said Manziel reported to the facility on Wednesday complaining of concussion-like symptoms. Browns coach Mike Pettine says the team will be cautious with Manziel and doesn't know yet whether the quarterback will have to enter the league's concussion protocol.

Leonard Fournette scored five touchdowns and ran for 212 yards as No. 22 LSU used a big third quarter to pull away for a 56-27 win over Texas Tech on Tuesday night in the Texas Bowl. Texas Tech (7-6) cut the lead to 1 early in the third quarter before the Tigers (9-3) scored 21 straight points, with two touchdowns by Fournette, to make it 42-20 entering the fourth. Fournette had two rushing touchdowns of 2 yards, ran for TDs of 43 and 4 yards and took a screen pass 44 yards for another score.
