No. 15 Michigan prevails over Minnesota on goal line stand (Yahoo Sports)

Two weeks after a gut-wrenching loss to rival Michigan State, the Michigan Wolverines found themselves 18 inches away from losing on the final play again. This time, the Wolverines let their opponent make the big mistake instead of the other way around. Wilton Speight came off the bench and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jehu Chesson with under 5 minutes to play and No. 15 Michigan stopped Mitch Leidner on a sneak as time expired to escape with a 29-26 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night.

DeShone Kizer hit Will Fuller with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 2:09 left in the game, KeiVarae Russell picked off a pass to end the last threat and No. 9 Notre Dame escaped with a 24-21 victory over No. 21 Temple on Saturday night. The biggest game in the history of Temple football lived up to the billing. The Owls (7-1) pushed the Fighting Irish (7-1) to the brink and took the lead with 4:45 left on a 36-yard field goal by Austin Jones.

The Kansas City Royals keep finding new ways to win this October. Second baseman Daniel Murphy's error on Eric Hosmer's grounder in the eighth inning keyed yet another comeback for the tenacious Royals, and Kansas City startled the New York Mets 5-3 Saturday night to take 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Edinson Volquez returned Saturday from his father's funeral in the Dominican Republic and gets a chance to pitch the Royals to their first World Series title in 30 years.

Stephen Curry scored 53 points, taking over the game with a 28-point third quarter, and the unbeaten Golden State Warriors defeated the winless Pelicans 134-120 in New Orleans' home opener Saturday night. Curry outscored all the Pelicans by two points in the third period, giving the reigning NBA MVP a career-high for scoring in a quarter. Draymond Green scored 21 points and Klay Thompson added 19 for defending champion Golden State, which has won its first three games this season.

Edinson Volquez has rejoined the Kansas City Royals following his father's death. The right-hander remains scheduled to start Sunday night in Game 5 of the World Series against the New York Mets, pending a conversation with manager Ned Yost. Volquez, back from the Dominican Republic, wore a hooded sweat shirt in the Kansas City dugout during Game 4 at Citi Field on Saturday night.

Highly touted true freshman quarterback Kyler Murray looked at ease in his first start as Texas A&M's quarterback with big runs and sharp decisions throwing the ball. Murray won't win the Heisman Trophy like Johnny Manziel did as a freshman three years ago, but the Aggies' newest dual threat has already given them a huge lift. Murray ran for 156 yards and threw for 223 more in his starting debut Saturday as Texas A&M ended a two-game slide with a 35-28 win over South Carolina.

No. 17 Florida State showed no sign of a letdown despite missing its top two playmakers, putting up one of its best offensive games of the season in a 45-21 win over Syracuse on Saturday. Sean Maguire passed for three touchdowns and Jacques Patrick ran for three scores as the Seminoles put up 550 yards of offense at Doak Campbell Stadium. The points tied a season high and the yardage was the second-highest this year for Florida State, which improves to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the ACC heading into next Saturday's Atlantic Division showdown at No. 3 Clemson.

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett has been suspended for one game after being cited with a misdemeanor offense of operating a vehicle under the influence. A statement from the school says Barrett was stopped at a Columbus police check point early Saturday morning. Barrett took over as the fulltime starter for the top-ranked Buckeyes last Saturday, throwing for 223 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-7 win over Rutgers.

Two balls launched over the wall, one fired over an opponent's head and just like that, David Wright and the New York Mets are right back in this World Series. Wright homered and drove in four runs, Curtis Granderson also connected and rookie Noah Syndergaard set a nasty tone at the start of a 9-3 victory against the Kansas City Royals that trimmed New York's deficit to 2-1 Friday night. Syndergaard's first pitch was a 97 mph fastball just off the inside corner and way over Alcides Escobar's head, eliciting a huge cheer from fans.

Despite a back issue, LeBron James intends to play in every game for the Cavaliers this season. The 30-year-old James recently received the second anti-inflammatory injection in his back in 10 months. It was late afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, dimmed by dark clouds on this overcast day in Kansas City, and even his New York Mets teammates wanted no part of 6-foot-6 Noah Syndergaard. David Wright bounded into the batting cage, watched a few fastballs whizz by like pellets fired from a BB gun, and stepped right back out.
